Apartments & Safety, should safety be a real concern or is it over hyped?

If it was me, it would always be a concern, that doesn't mean I would constantly worry about it, it means that I would do my research BEFORE I signed any lease. A good way to start researching different Apartment Complexes or areas of Austin is Krime Labb, they were featured on a local news station and they get great reviews! Enter the street address, or zip code or other criteria and you will see the actual crime reports for that neighborhood.

If you ask the leasing personnel at the Apartment office you will simply be told that they can not comment but you can go to your local police dept website and look it up. Some people misinterpret that statement to mean that they have high crime, but it usually has nothing to do with that, its just a canned answer they all give, no one can EVER SAY their place is safe, no matter how safe it may be.

Crime knows no zip code, it happens every where, however if you do your own research BEFORE you sign a lease you can greatly reduce the chances of  becoming a crime victim.

When you do move in, there are things that seem like common sense...lock your car doors, do not leave valuables in your car in sight, even if it is locked.

Lock your apartment door and windows, be aware of your surroundings, know your neighbors.
